St. Clare's Primary School, Harold's Cross is situated on a beautiful landscaped site. It was founded in 1803 and is the oldest Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Dublin. It was originally an orphanage school. The school opened to the general public in 1952 and now caters for boys and girls from Junior Infants to 6th Class, as well as two autistic classes. 303 pupils currently attend the school. The staff consists of 22 teachers and 8 SNAs. There are 12 mainstream class teachers. The school has a part-time secretary and full-time caretaker/gardener. After school care is provided within the school. There is also a pre-school on the school grounds which provides one year “free” Pre-school education through the Early Childhood Care & Education Scheme (ECCE). The child must be aged between 3 years 2 months and 4 years 6 months on 1st September each year. More information can be obtained by contacting the office.

As a Digital School we use ICT to enhance pupils' learning experiences within the school. It is not only the the teachers that use ICT within St. Clare's, with the pupils also helping to keep the News & Events blog up to date. The school also participates in the Dissolving Boundaries Project annually and this year the sixth class took part in the Mission V project. After school third class pupils learn new ICT skills by taking part in a computer club throughout the year.

The school is a Green school and has all six green flags and strives to provide a healthy and green environment for the pupils to learn in every day. We received our first European Green Flag on 25 June 2001. We promote a healthy lifestyle and particiapte in the Incredible Edibles programme annually and are currently striving to obtain the Active School Award.

The well equipped hall allows for all sporting actitivities to be taught during the school year, while the pupils in fifth and sixth classes receive swimming lessons during the Spring term in Rathmines Swimming Pool. Weather permitting pupils can enjoy their PE lessons on the school pitch. Extra curricular sporting actvities provided for pupils after school include: hurling, camogie, gaelic football, athletics, tennis and basketball.

Science is a big part of St. Clare's and the pupils throughout the school have enabled the school to receive the Discover Primary Science Award every year since 2008. The school also participates in the Xperience Engineering Project project and the Greenwave project annually. Pupils in fifth class participated in the Primary Science Fair in 2010 and 2011 and this year they participated in the Ericsson Science Project.

Music and song plays a big part in St. Clare's with our choir participating regulary in the Córfhéile na Scoileanna, as well as other choral competitions in the Leinster region. The school orchestra is growing every year and Ms. Boylan our music teacher also provides pupils with violin lessons. Ms. Duff teaches the recorder to second, third and fourth class pupils, while Mr Lynch teaches the tin whistle to sixth class.


The St. Clares Radio blog promotes languages and has a host of Gaeilge podcasts which aim to help children learn our native language in an easy manner. German is also taught in the school to fourth, fifth and sixth classes. As well as learning the German language the pupils learn all about German culture and we host a German Christmas Fair annually. Check out our German page for more information. Every year we also celebrate the diverse cultures of all pupils within the school by having an Intercultural Day.
