Active School
Here in St. Clare’s we promote an active and healthy lifestyle for our pupils. A wide range of sports is catered both within school time and after school. All the pupils are encouraged to take up a sport and to join local clubs. The pupils participate in a wide variety of sports from the start of the school year, right up until the end of the school. These include: skipping, gaelic football, hurling, camogie, swimming, athletics, basketball, cycling and tennis.
Cumann na mBunscol Átha Cliath
The school has always being and active participant in the Cumann na mBunscol Átha Cliath sports: Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie and Athletics.
Gaelic Football & Hurling
The boys from 3 to 6 classes take part in the Cumann na mBunscol Átha Cliath Gaeilic football and hurling competitions. They also participate in a local hurling league between other schools in the area, which is organised by our local hurling club St. Kevin’s GAA Hurling Club. Coaches from St. Kevin’s come in weekly to train the boys and girls.
Gaelic Football & Camogie
The girls from 3 to 6 classes take part in the Cumann na mBunscol Átha Cliath Gaeilic http://cnmb.gaa.ie football and camogie competitions. They also participate in the annual St. Clare’s camogie blitz. This is a competition in which St. Clare’s primary schools from all over Ireland participate in a camogie blitz. We are proud to say that the girls from St. Clare’s, Harold’s Cross have won the blitz four years in a row.
Athletics
The boys and girls from third to sixth class tarin a number of athleict codes during the spring and summer months. These include: sprinting, long distance running, hurdles, high jump and the shot put. The school has a range of equipment, which includes a high jump mat, to ensure that the pupils receive the best training possible. The pupils taken to Irish Town Sports Stadium to compete in a school athletics competion. They also compete in the Annual Santry Sports competion in Morton Stadium. (http://www.mortonstadium.ie/).
During our June Sports day all classes participate in a number of events that keeps them fit and healthy.
Skipping
Skipping is great sport for general all round fitness, as well as allowing pupils to recite a number of ryhmes. All pupils from junior infants to sixth class skip during yard time. The school provides annual skipping workshops for all pupils so that can learn new skills and improve their exisitng ones. Skipping challenges are held in December and June and the pupils can receive internationally recognised awards.

Swimming & Water Safety
As part of the PE curriculum 5th and 6th class undertake 6 weeks of swimming lessons annually. The pupils walk to the local swimming pool in Rathmines for the lessons. The pupils in third to sixth class are also taught a series of lessons on water safety. After the lessons a representative from Water Safety Ireland http://www.iws.ie/ tests the pupils on what they have learned and they receive certificates if they and they can answer all of the questions! http://www.swanleisure.ie/
Cycling
As an green school we promote looking after the environment and encourage all pupils to walk, cylce or scoot to and from school every day, which of course ties in nicely with us being an active school. th class learn the rules of the road and how to cycle safely on the road oer a 6 week period annually. While the pupils travel to/from school we want to ensure that all of the pupils are safe. To help the pupils be safe all the pupils wear high visibility jackets while travelling to/from school. The fifth class pupils also undertake 6 weeks of cycling lessons during which they learn the rules of the road and how to cycle safely on the road. http://www.cyclingsafetyschool.com/index.html Cycling Safety School.
Tennis & Basketball
After school pupils are provided with the opportunity to take part in tennis lessons. All of the equipment is provided for the pupils here in the school. The lessons are provided for in the ahll and in the school yard.
Third class pupils receive basketball lessons in the first term of school in our school yard which has it’s own basketball court.
