SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY
(PDF Version - Click Here)

Proudly wearing the school uniform is an integral part of the St. Clare’s ethos. It is our school policy that all children wear the school uniform when attending school, or when participating in a school organised event. We provide parents with a complete list of the items needed for the school uniform when their child enters the school for the first time and send out reminders to all parents at other times when we feel it is necessary.

Aims and objectives

Our policy on school uniform is based on the notion that the school uniform:

  • promotes a sense of pride in our school;

  • engenders a sense of community and belonging towards St. Clare’s;

  • is practical and smart;

  • identifies the children with St. Clare’s;

  • prevents children coming to school in fashion clothes that could be distracting in class;

  • makes children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance;

  • is regarded as suitable wear for school and is good value for money by most parents; and

  • is designed with health and safety in mind.

Jewellery

On health and safety grounds we do not allow children to wear jewellery in our school. The exception to this rule is watches. We ask that children remove them during PE and games.

Hairstyles

The school does not permit pupils to have ‘extreme’ haircuts or hair colours that could serve as a distraction to other children. We ask too that hair be kept neat and tidy, not too short/not too long without any dyes, designs or motifs. This is for the same reason as the wearing of uniforms – that there is a degree of uniformity among the pupils and that no pressure is brought to bear on any student to observe current clothing or hair fashions. For hygiene purposes long hair is to be tied back or plaited. For safety, health and hygiene reasons hair gel or hair spray must not be worn. Parents are asked to check their child’s hair regularly for outbreaks of head lice.

Footwear

St. Clare’s Primary School wants all children to grow into healthy adults. We believe that it is dangerous for children to wear shoes that have platform soles or high heels, so we do not allow children to wear such shoes in our school. Neither do we allow children to wear trainers to school except on PE day; this is because we think that this footwear is appropriate for sport and for leisurewear, but is not in keeping with the smart appearance of the school uniform.

The role of parents

We ask all parents who send their children to St. Clare’s Harold’s Cross to support the school uniform policy. We believe that parents have a duty to send their children to school correctly dressed and ready for their daily schoolwork. One of the responsibilities of parents is to ensure that their child has the correct uniform, and that it is clean and in good repair.

The role of the Board of Management

The Board of Management supports the Principal in implementing the school uniform policy. It considers all representations from parents regarding the uniform policy and liaises with the Principal to ensure that the policy is implemented fairly and with sensitivity.

The Board of Management ensures that the school uniform policy helps children to dress sensibly, in clothing that is hardwearing and practical.

Monitoring and review

The Board of Management monitors and reviews the school uniform policy by:

  • Seeking the views of parents, to ensure that they agree with and support the policy; and

  • Requiring the Principal to report to the Board of Management on the way the school uniform policy is implemented.
